Following allegations of incompetence that resulted in the recent death of a patient at the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s (TTH) Accident and Emergency Ward, President John Dramani Mahama fired Dr. Adam Atiku, the hospital’s chief executive officer.
Concerns over the facility’s declining healthcare services, where a number of critical medical devices are allegedly broken, are the reason behind the decision.
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, responded to the situation by making an unexpected visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22, as part of a larger initiative to evaluate the difficulties in delivering healthcare in the Northern Region.
During the visit, the Minister voiced grave concerns about the quantity of medical equipment that is sitting dormant, even though suppliers are being paid.
Additionally, he emphasized how hospital operations are affected by Tamale’s continuous water crisis, characterizing it as a regional problem deserving of immediate presidential assistance.
Mr. Akandoh discussed plans to address the hospital’s equipment problems and stated that hospital management’s priorities will guide any Ministry action. With promises of better healthcare delivery, he urged citizens to keep using the hospital’s services.
“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I can not do it all alone, I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronise the facility,” he stated.
