President John Mahama has come under fire from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for firing government workers rather than concentrating on creating jobs.
He referred to the action as a violation of campaign pledges and democratic values. Despite promising to create more opportunities for Ghanaians, Dr. Bawumia accused Mahama’s administration on Wednesday of unilaterally terminating the employment of public personnel hired under the previous government.
“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” Bawumia wrote on Facebook.
According to reports, Mahama’s administration has fired employees in a number of industries since assuming office, including teachers, nurses, and security guards, just because they were employed during the previous administration, Bawumia claimed.
Even non-political public employees were being singled out for their alleged associations, he said, calling the action unfair and absurd.
“In some of the cases, the only reason for dismissal was that the persons whose livelihoods have been destroyed are known to or related to politicians as if to suggest that they cannot live independent professional lives, however qualified they are,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also expressed alarm about what he called the nation’s worsening security situation, including violent mob activities against state institutions, military raids on the residences of former government officials, and attacks on journalists.
He cautioned, “This is not a peaceful democratic transition, but rather reminiscent of a military takeover.”
The former vice president stated that Ghana should not return to previous political excesses and urged Mahama to undo the dismissals and rule in the best interests of all Ghanaians.
He emphasized that “repeating or intensifying what may have happened in the past does not reset.” “Ghana can do better,” Dr. Bawumia said, urging the preservation of constitutional order and state institutions. Ghana needs to improve.
