President Mahama Directs Finance Minister to Bridge $156 Million USAID Funding Gap

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to take immediate steps to address a $156 million funding gap caused by the suspension of USAID’s international funding program.

The President expressed deep concern over the impact of the projected $78.2 million shortfall on critical sectors, particularly malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition, and the fight against HIV/AIDS. The availability of antiretroviral drugs, as well as testing and prevention programs, is also under serious threat.

In a statement issued by the Presidency’s Communications Directorate, the President emphasized the urgent need for bridging arrangements to prioritize interventions in these critical areas to mitigate the adverse effects caused by the funding disruption.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, signed the statement and reassured the public of the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable sectors from the negative consequences of the funding gap.

Efforts to mobilize resources to address the shortfall are expected to be swift, ensuring that vital health and social programs continue uninterrupted.
