Reports indicating that the government plans to eliminate teacher trainee payments have been denied by the Ministry of Education.
The allegations are based on a statement made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu in a meeting with the Executives of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the Ministry alleges.
The Ministry clarified the Minister’s comments by saying that the government is still dedicated to helping College of Education students and is willing to look at measures to increase financial aid.
It stated that an enhanced student loan program might be taken into consideration as an extra measure of help if needed.
The Minister also underlined that the government would keep the allowances in place until after more discussions, all parties involved would come to a definite agreement.
In a statement dated Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Ministry addressed the claims, stating, “The Ministry has taken note of a front-page publication in the Tuesday, 4th February 2025 edition of The Daily Graphic with the headline ‘Teacher Trainee Allowance to go.’ The headline is not only sensational but misleading, as their narration of the story indicated.”
In order to avoid needless worries among stakeholders, the Ministry advised media outlets to confirm information with them before to publishing.
The Ministry urged the public to ignore the false news, saying, “We urge the public to disregard the misleading publication and rely on official communication from the Ministry for accurate information.” The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting teacher trainees and education delivery.
