Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the board chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (henceforth ECG), has reassured the people of Ghana that an unexpected shift in leadership won’t affect the availability of power.
Following an emergency board meeting, as a result of Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama’s resignation as Managing Director of ECG, the Board Chair—the Majority Leader in Parliament and the member representing Effutu Constituency—made the announcement.
On behalf of the board, Mr. Afenyo-Markin mentioned that the resignation had been accepted.
Mr. Dubik Mahama in a statement said “I am writing to formally resign from my position as Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, effective two weeks from the above date. The decision has not come easily, but after much reflection, I have concluded that it is in my best interest to step away for personal reasons.
However, the board chair admits there are challenges which need to be addressed with the help of ECG’s customers.
‘We are faced with challenges but we do not want to make it a one sided view. It is from both sides. We would have to implement the necessary reforms that would make us super efficient and the cooperation of the public is also essential’ Hon. Afenyo-Markin asserted.
However, he thinks that these issues would be resolved and the general public would have consistent access to power.
“We are all aware of the challenges we face,” he continued, adding that “certain issues were communicated to the government and I believe it was done in good faith.” The new board is in the process of being formed.
The business would shortly release some information to the public. The ECG Board Chairman said, “And support mechanisms are in place to make ECG more efficient so the public can be assured that every effort will be made to ensure uninterrupted supply of power.”
