The lawyer for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has denied rumors that his client is going on a hunger strike while being held in custody.
Wontumi is still being held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and is being treated at a clinic, Andy Appiah-Kubi explained in a statement to the media.
While acknowledging that Wontumi has faced health issues since his confinement started, he denied reports that he is refusing to eat.
Following an earlier claim that Wontumi was on a hunger strike in protest of his imprisonment conditions, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, clarified the situation.
The scenario is “shocking,” according to Annoh-Dompreh, who also voiced concern over the lack of official information regarding Wontumi’s health.
The assertion was strongly denied by Appiah-Kubi, who disclosed that he had just eaten dinner with his client.
“Two days ago in the evening [Wednesday, May 28], I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday,” he stated.
In connection with the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank), Chairman Wontumi is presently being investigated for possible financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering. Despite the fact that EOCO has granted him GH¢50 million bail with two justifiable sureties, his legal team has only been able to obtain one, therefore he remains in custody.
