Following the general elections in 2024, the Ghana Police Service has been criticized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Steering Committee for their “lackadaisical” response to violent and disorderly situations.
The committee expressed alarm in a news release following an emergency meeting on Tuesday, December 10, regarding the increasing number of alleged acts of property destruction, intimidation, and vandalism committed by National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters.
The NPP said that in multiple collation centers, including those in the constituencies of Fanteakwa North, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Techiman South, and Aowin, its parliamentary candidates and a few Electoral Commission (EC) staffers were detained at gunpoint.
According to the party, these people were forced under duress to declare results in favor of the NDC.
The NPP also charged that NDC supporters had stolen, set fire to, and destroyed its parliamentary candidates’ assets as well as public properties.
“This is not acceptable! The statement said, “This is lawlessness.”
The party’s leadership is extremely alarmed by these events, and they are especially disturbed by the Ghana Police Service’s generally passivity.
The Police Service was heavily criticized by the NP for what they saw as their inaction in the face of anarchy.
The party urged the police to step up and make sure those responsible for these brutal crimes are held to account.
The statement said, “We are especially disappointed in the leadership of the Police Service for its careless handling of the developing lawlessness.”
Additionally, the party urged Ghanaians and civic society to join in denouncing the violent acts, which it claimed threatened the country’s democratic and security underpinnings.
The NPP advised its members and supporters to maintain composure and refrain from taking retaliatory action, despite its dissatisfaction with the election’s outcome.
As the party starts to reorganize, regroup, and plan for future elections, the Steering Committee urged party members to provide helpful critiques and recommendations via the proper channels.
In addition to urging the NDC to condemn incidents of violence and vandalism committed by its supporters, the NPP emphasized the need of all political parties upholding the rule of law.
“Ghanaians did not elect this change,” the statement continued.
