According to Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to work with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to use a forged voter registration in order to manipulate the upcoming general elections and threaten Ghana’s democracy.
During the NDC’s “Enough is Enough” protest against the EC in Sekondi-Takoradi, Buah underlined the party’s demand that the EC address the issues brought up by the parties in order to guarantee a legitimate election.
“We want to safeguard our democracy. This call is for the peace and stability of our country. We know that the electoral commission is colluding with the NPP, so we are doing everything to stop it. We know that the register is not credible and we have asked for an independent audit. We think that is the only way to assure the people of Ghana of a credible register that will lead to transparent and credible elections,” he said.
Nana Toku, the chairman of the Western Regional NDC, also stated that they are resolved to keep working till their issues are resolved.
“The EC has presented a register which is not credible to the people of this country and we are saying that, until that register is corrected, we will not rest until they do so. Enough is enough for us and we want peace in this country and therefore they should do the right thing. If they do not respond to it, there will be another action,” he said.
About 800 police officers were stationed to provide security for the well-attended Western Regional NDC demonstration against the EC, which featured Dr Sipa Yankey, the former CEO of the Ghana National Gas Company. Before delivering their petition to the EC office, the protesters marched from the Takoradi Mall through Effia-Kuma and on to Sekondi.
They carried placards that read: “Rigged Register”, “Bias EC, Audit the Register”, “EC Banza“, “Clergy; silence is complicity. Speak Truth to Power.”
