WASSCE: WAEC cancels results of 653 candidates, withholds thousands more

Following documented incidences of examination cheating, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has canceled the results of 653 candidates who took the 2025 WASSCE. Thousands more candidates will face further fines.

The council emphasized in a statement signed by John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, that investigations authorized by the Ghana Examinations Committee at its 40th meeting revealed that 653 candidates were found using cell phones in examination halls, an offense that automatically cancels all results.

Additionally, 6,295 candidates had their subject results revoked for bringing foreign materials into exam halls, including printed sheets, prepared notes, and textbooks.

There are still 1,066 candidates being investigated for various suspected offenses, including 908 with withheld topic results and 158 with withheld full results.

The final results are anticipated before the end of December 2025, according to WAEC, which also disclosed that subject scores from 185 schools had been withheld due to alleged collusion. According to the Council, 35 people—19 of them were teachers—were connected to actions that jeopardized the exam’s integrity. The remaining sixteen have not yet been arraigned, while nineteen have already been found guilty.

WAEC extended appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, school heads, supervisors and exam officials for supporting the conduct and release of the 2025 WASSCE results.
