The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates, with hundreds of candidates sanctioned for various forms of examination malpractice.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, WAEC said the results have been dispatched to schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Candidates may also access their results online via the Council’s official website, www.waecgh.org.
A total of 620,243 candidates, comprising 304,415 males and 315,828 females from 20,789 schools, registered for this year’s examination, which was conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide.
The examination also catered for 136 visually impaired candidates, 282 candidates with hearing assessment needs, and 510 candidates requiring other forms of test accommodation.
WAEC disclosed that 3,601 candidates were absent from the examination.
Results cancelled and withheld
The Council said its 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, held on July 21, 2026, approved sanctions after concluding investigations into examination irregularities detected during the conduct of the examination and the marking of scripts.
According to WAEC:
The subject results of 496 candidates have been cancelled.
The entire results of 105 candidates have been cancelled.
The subject results of 119 candidates have been withheld.
The entire results of 48 candidates have also been withheld.
In addition, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny.
WAEC stated that the withheld results may either be released or cancelled after investigations, which are expected to be completed by August 31, 2026.
The Council advised affected candidates to visit https://irreg.waecgh.org/ and click on the ‘Withheld/Cancelled’ button on the homepage to view the reasons for the sanctions and any further action required.
Heads of schools and proprietors can also use their results-listing login credentials to check the status of affected candidates.
WAEC cautioned candidates and the general public against fraudsters who claim they can upgrade examination results in exchange for money.
It stressed that its results are secure and can be authenticated, urging the public not to engage the services of individuals making such false promises.
The Council also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, heads of schools, supervisors, invigilators, examiners, and other stakeholders for their support in ensuring the successful conduct of the 2026 BECE.
