Hon. Kwasi Bonzo, popularly known as Bonzo Kay, has been elected as the new New Patriotic Party (NPP) Western Regional Secretary after defeating incumbent Regional Secretary Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa (OKT) in the party’s regional executive elections.
Mr Bonzo secured 211 votes, while Mr Afrifa polled 157 votes, handing the former Ellembelle District Chief Executive a convincing 54-vote victory.
The outcome marks a major development in the NPP’s Western Regional leadership and places Bonzo Kay at the centre of the party’s organisational efforts in the region.
Mr Bonzo, a four-time NPP parliamentary candidate for the Ellembelle Constituency, brings considerable experience in constituency-level politics, electoral campaigns and grassroots mobilisation to the position.
His victory comes at a critical period for the NPP, which is seeking to rebuild its structures, strengthen its grassroots base and improve its electoral fortunes across the Western Region.
The 54-vote margin gives Mr Bonzo a clear mandate as he prepares to assume responsibility for the party’s regional secretariat.
As Regional Secretary, he will be expected to play a pivotal role in coordinating the NPP’s regional activities, strengthening communication between the regional and constituency structures and supporting the implementation of party programmes.
His extensive experience in frontline politics is also expected to influence his approach to grassroots organisation and electoral mobilisation.
Bonzo Kay has indicated that revitalising the NPP’s grassroots structures will be a key priority of his administration.
He has expressed determination to re-energise the party’s base and strengthen its capacity to compete effectively in constituencies where the NPP has suffered electoral setbacks.
The Western Region remains a crucial political battleground, with the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) competing strongly for parliamentary seats and political influence.
Mr Bonzo is therefore expected to focus on building a more cohesive and responsive regional structure capable of supporting constituency executives and mobilising party supporters.
Before his election as Regional Secretary, Mr Bonzo served as the District Chief Executive for Ellembelle and contested the Ellembelle parliamentary seat four times on the NPP ticket.
His prolonged involvement in constituency politics has provided him with extensive experience in electoral campaigns, grassroots engagement and party organisation.
With the election now concluded, attention will shift to how the new Regional Secretary translates his campaign promises into tangible organisational gains for the NPP.
His ability to unite the party, strengthen its structures and improve grassroots mobilisation will be closely watched as the NPP seeks to reposition itself for future electoral contests in the Western Region.
Bonzo K’s victory over the incumbent also signals a change in leadership at the regional secretariat, with party supporters now looking to the new administration to inject fresh energy and strategic direction into the NPP’s operations across the region.
