Veteran Kumawood actor Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi dies after prolonged kidney illness

Veteran Kumawood actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi has reportedly passed away after a prolonged battle with kidney illness, bringing another moment of grief to Ghana’s movie industry.

The actor’s death comes months after his health condition became a subject of public concern, prompting colleagues, fans and well-wishers to mobilise financial support for his treatment and a planned kidney transplant.

Several personalities within the Kumawood fraternity responded to the appeal. Popular actor and producer Kojo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, donated GH¢10,000 towards Obuobi’s medical expenses, while veteran actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu contributed GH¢50,000 to support the cost of the life-saving transplant.

Despite the generous donations and the overwhelming support from the entertainment community, Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi sadly succumbed to the illness.

Over the years, Obuobi established himself as a respected figure in Ghana’s local film industry, making significant contributions both as an actor and filmmaker. His dedication, experience and passion for storytelling earned him admiration from colleagues and audiences alike.

His passing is expected to trigger an outpouring of tributes from the creative arts fraternity, with many remembering him for his invaluable role in the growth and development of the Kumawood movie industry.
