In a matter concerning the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to declare some parliamentary seats vacant the Speaker’s lawyers have asked Justice Ernest Gaewu of the Supreme Court to step aside.
Speaker Alban Bagbin filed a lawsuit, and the Supreme Court started hearing the matter on Wednesday, October 30.
The Speaker is trying to reverse a previous court decision that gave his statements on the open seats a stay of execution.
The Speaker’s primary attorney, Thaddeus Sory, contended during the hearing that Justice Gaewu’s prior political association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) might jeopardise his objectivity in the case. In fact, Justice Gaewu stood as a parliamentary candidate for one of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituencies in the Volta Region, according to Sory.
In order to preserve the impartiality and integrity of the proceedings, Mr. Sory said that Justice Gaewu’s prior political affiliations might have influenced his viewpoint on this important parliamentary issue. As a result, he asked that he resign.
