UN General Assembly: “The future is African” – Mahama declares

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized Africa’s critical role in promoting development and change, calling on the international community to acknowledge the continent as essential to the future of the world.

In his remarks at the 80th United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, September 25, Mahama cited demographic forecasts that demonstrate Africa’s increasing global clout.

“By the year 2050, more than 25% of the world’s population is expected to come from the African continent. Additionally, by 2050, one third of all young people, aged 15 to 24, will be residing on the African continent,” he said.

Mahama emphasised that Africa’s youthful population is a powerful engine for global innovation, growth, and progress.

“So, you see, the future is African,” he declared. “Allow me to say this once again, a little louder for the people in the back: The future is African!”

In spite of prevailing narratives that minimize its importance, he also emphasized Africa’s current role as a catalyst for systemic change, citing its contributions to ecological stability, economic reform, and human potential.

“If this reality, which is fact-based and straightforward, seems provocative or unsettling, perhaps it’s because you’re viewing it through the lens of centuries of racism, colonialism, imperialism, and the resulting implicit bias,” Mahama added.

The president urged a change in global perspective, stating that Africa should be seen as a force for change and solutions rather than as a continent characterized by problems.
