Claims on social media that the University of Ghana (UG) collected more than GHS11 million in graduation fees without distributing medallions and scroll holders have been denied.
On Monday, February 17, UG’s Public Affairs Directorate responded to a Joy News and Joy 99.7 FM article by calling the assertions false and deceptive. The institution claims that instead of GHS11 million as reported, each of the 15,776 expected graduates paid a GHS500 graduation fee, for a total of GHS7,888,000.
The cost includes water, administrative expenses, graduation medallions, scroll holders, gown rental, congregation publication, and university souvenirs, among other necessary services.
UG emphasized that although all of the products on the list were supplied, the distribution of medallions and scroll holders was impacted by procurement delays. Graduates have already been notified of the delay in a communication dated February 10, 2025.
The institution promised to provide the missing items as soon as possible.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate for JoyNews to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information,” the statement read.
The University of Ghana reiterated its dedication to maintaining the greatest standards in all aspects of its operations, including the planning of commencement exercises.
Graduands were reassured by the Public Affairs Directorate that every attempt is being made to supply the outstanding materials as soon as possible.
