UCC Vice-Chancellor’s lawyers demand GTEC withdraw suspension directive

Lawyers for Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the vice chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), have formally requested that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) revoke the letter directing the vice chancellor to resign.

Legal counsel for Prof. Boampong characterized GTEC’s directive as illegal and in violation of an existing court order in a strongly worded letter dated September 19, 2025, addressed to GTEC and copied to important stakeholders such as the Minister of Education, the Chancellor and Council Chair of UCC, and the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors’ Ghana.

According to the lawyers, GTEC’s letter dated September 19, 2025, is reminiscent of a previous UCC Council Chairman’s attempt to remove the Vice-Chancellor via text message; this action is currently the focus of a legal dispute before the Cape Coast High Court.

Until the matter is resolved, the High Court issued an injunction on October 8, 2024, prohibiting the University’s Governing Council and other interested parties from talking or acting in any way that would result in Prof. Boampong’s dismissal or suspension.

On February 5, 2025, GTEC’s later attempt to have this injunction overturned at the Supreme Court was denied.

The lawyers further reminded GTEC that the Constitution allows the state to hire individuals over 60 in specific circumstances, a clause they claim supports their client’s ongoing tenure in government.

As further justifications for Prof. Boampong’s employment, they pointed to university statutes and UCC’s own rollover policy.

“It is therefore surprising that you have written a letter taking a decision that has suspended the appointment of our client as Vice-Chancellor,” the letter stated. “Apart from disrespecting the court orders, your actions also amount to side-stepping the Statutes of the University.”

The legal team has called for GTEC to immediately withdraw its letter and declared that Prof. Boampong will continue to carry out his responsibilities as vice-chancellor in accordance with the court’s decision and university policies.

The letter cautioned that noncompliance would result in additional legal action to enforce the court’s jurisdiction.
