Tragedy in Sunyani: Chief and Wife Burnt to Death in Domestic Fire

A devastating fire incident occurred in Asuakwaa Top, a surbab of Sunyani in the Bono Region, claiming the lives of a chief and his wife.

The victims, identified as 65-year-old Nana Siribour Ampofo II, the Wrempimhene of Wenchi, and his 48-year-old wife, Grace Yaa Ampofo, died in the blaze that destroyed a three-bedroom house.

The residents are now wondering how the news of the tragic deaths of the chief and his wife will be conveyed to their children, who are currently in Wenchi, and other family members.

The fire, according to the residents account, broke out around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday after a heavy downpour.

The couples burnt beyond recognition.

According to a resident, Dortse Mawutse, the couple was trapped inside despite efforts to escape.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with investigations ongoing, but Mawutse told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark that he suspects electrical fault or gas explosion.

The Ghana National Fire Service in the region say they received a distress call but arrived to find the fire raging intensively but managed to control the situation.

According to the Bono Regional fire service public relations directorate, their preliminary findings suggest the victims attempted to escape but were trapped in the kitchen.

The landlord, who is abroad, expressed shock over the incident. He told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari on the phone that the couples relocated to the house in May 2025.

The resident recounted the tragic events, stating that a female occupant who escaped unhurt alerted others, but efforts to save the couple were unsuccessful.

The fire service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
