Thibaut Courtois Criticizes La Liga’s Miami Plans Ahead of 300th Real Madrid Appearance

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has voiced strong opposition to La Liga’s proposal to host a league match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, labelling it an “adulteration of the competition.” His comments come as he prepares to make his 300th appearance for Los Blancos, a major milestone in his illustrious career.

Speaking to the media ahead of Real Madrid’s upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Juventus at the Santiago Bernabéu, the Belgian international reflected on his journey since joining the club in 2018 from Chelsea.

“It’s a special moment for me. Reaching 300 games for Real Madrid is a big achievement and shows my consistency and commitment since arriving here,” Courtois said.

However, the veteran goalkeeper did not shy away from criticizing La Liga’s latest international initiative. Courtois argued that taking domestic matches abroad undermines the fairness of the competition and violates the players’ Collective Bargaining Agreements.

“It’s not the same as basketball or American football. Those sports play abroad to grow their audience. Football already has global reach. Moving a league game outside Spain distorts the competition,” he stressed.

Courtois’ comments add to the ongoing debate about La Liga’s efforts to globalize the competition by staging official fixtures in the United States, an idea that has faced consistent resistance from players and clubs alike.

Turning his attention to his teammates, the 32-year-old also shared words of encouragement for Vinícius Júnior, urging the Brazilian forward to stay true to his fiery playing style.

“If that energy and personality help us win games, then he should keep it up,” Courtois said with a grin.

As Real Madrid gear up for a crucial European night against Juventus, Courtois’ upcoming 300th appearance not only highlights his importance to the team but also underscores his role as one of the sport’s most outspoken leaders, unafraid to defend what he believes safeguards the integrity of football.
