The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has received instructions from the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II not to behave in a way that would support accusations that he is arrogant.

The Asantehene claimed he had never known the king Opoku Prempeh to be haughty as a child, but it is now the responsibility of the Manhyia South Lawmaker to examine and refute that claim.

“They say you are arrogant, don’t let what they say be the reality,” the Asantehene said when President Akufo-Addo introduced the Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket to him at Mahyia Palace on Tuesday, July 9.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was also instructed to always obey his boss’s orders by the Asantehene Otumfuo.

He suggested that Dr. Opoku Prempeh back his boss in order to make sure that Dr. Bawumia does not regret designating him as his running mate.

“I’ve seen Opoku Prempeh develop,” the Asantehene remarked, emphasising that you should follow Bawumia with humility and that he shouldn’t regret his choice in you.

He also asked Dr. Bawumia to let him know if Dr. Opoku Prempeh behaves badly in a rider so he may correct him.

“Please let me know if there is a mistake so I can correct him,” he stated.

For his part, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo voiced faith in the Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket’s ability to perform to Ghanaians’ expectations.

During Tuesday, July 9, at the Manhyia Palace, Mr. Akufo-Addo unveiled Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate. Having worked with both gentlemen, he could attest to their diligence.

“I have trust and confidence in the two of them to do the work. I have worked with the two and I know that they can do. I know that on the 7th of December when Ghanaians have given them the mandate they will work to meet the expectations of Ghana,” President Akufo-Addo said.

At an emergency meeting on Thursday, July 4, in Accra, the National Council of the NPP overwhelmingly approved the appointment of Dr. Opku Prempeh.

Following the ceremony, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh gave NPP members and supporters his word that he would assist Dr. Bawumia in leading a strong 2024 campaign to end the eight-year electoral cycle.

He claims to be aware that the task at hand calls for teamwork. He went on to exhort every NPP member to work together in order to accomplish their “ambitious goal of transforming Ghana into a prosperous nation.”

“I am deeply appreciative of the National Council, our party’s grassroots members, and our distinguished President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for their steadfast belief and backing in me,” he declared in a press release shortly after the NPP National Council unanimously selected him as their running mate on Thursday, July 3.
