Stop maligning public officials carrying out lawful duties – A-G scolds Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been urged by Attorney General and Justice Minister Dr. Dominic Ayine to refrain from abusing his parliamentary immunity by disparaging public servants engaged in lawfully authorized public business.

Dr. Ayine discussed the ongoing inquiry into the reported raid on the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, during a press conference on Monday, March 24.

The A-G clarified that the event that occurred at the former governor’s residence was a legally sanctioned search rather than a warrant, as some have attempted to claim.

He revealed that a recording had been made, capturing comments by Addison regarding the incident.

“If the Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin is daring me, we will make that recording available to the media,” Dr Ayine stated.

“Afenyo Markin should desist from maligning law enforcement officers and myself for the work that we are doing,” he said.

Dr. Ayine informed the public of his dedication to acting morally while emphasizing his position as the bar’s leader.

“I am the leader of the bar, and I will act in the best interests of the ethics of the profession. Everyone at the bar knows me for that, so I won’t do anything unethical,” he added.

He added that in order to make sure their investigations are carried out within the legal parameters, he has given advice to the National Security and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

“I have advised both EOCO and National Security about staying within the bounds of the law when conducting investigations,” Dr. Ayine affirmed.

The Attorney General reiterated, “Afenyo Markin should not abuse his parliamentary immunity by defaming public officials who are conducting normal, legally sanctioned public business.”
