Soldiers Remove Rival Mamprusi Chief from Bawku Following Otumfuo’s Mediation Directive

Security personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku, in accordance with the latest government directive grounded in a mediation report issued by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Ministry of the Interior, in a brief release issued on December 24, 2025, confirmed that the enforcement action aligns with key recommendations submitted to President John Dramani Mahama after the Asantehene concluded his mediation efforts in the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

The Ministry assured the public that Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe and currently in the protective custody of state security agencies.

In his comprehensive report, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II reiterated that the Supreme Court’s ruling, which recognizes Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Bawku Naba, must be upheld without exception. He underscored the fundamental principle that Ghana’s constitution and judicial decisions remain supreme in matters of traditional leadership and national governance.

“We, as Chiefs, no matter how exalted, do not live above the Constitution of Ghana and the laws duly enacted and affirmed by the courts,” the Asantehene declared.

He further encouraged the government to act decisively against any attempts to undermine the lawful authority of Naba Azoka II, emphasizing that strict legal compliance is crucial for restoring enduring peace and stability in Bawku.

The Asantehene also advised that the Nayiri of Mamprugu must acknowledge and respect the prevailing legal order that affirms Naba Azoka II as the overlord of the Kusasi traditional area.

The Ministry of the Interior stated:
“This afternoon, personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku, pursuant to the mediation report submitted by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II regarding the Bawku matter. Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe and under the care of the security services.”

The latest government action forms a critical step toward enforcing the rule of law and advancing peacebuilding efforts in the conflict-prone area.
