SkyTrain case: ‘I’m no more representing Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’  — lawyer writes to court withdrawing services

The lawyer for the former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Board Chairperson has retracted his services in the case against Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi and another individual who are on trial for allegedly causing $2 million in financial loss in a deal to construct an urban sky train system in Accra.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah, the fund’s CEO, have entered a not guilty plea to the six counts of conspiracy, knowingly causing financial damage to the state, and intentional dissipation of public monies that they are facing in the High Court.

On Monday, October 13, when the case was called for the prosecution to call its first witness, Asamoah’s attorney was present, but Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s attorney was not.

The presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay asked the accused why his lawyer was absent.

In his response, the accused who had always been represented by Duke Aaron Sasu said, “ I had a misunderstanding with my lawyer and it is being mediated”.

Shortly after the response, one of the court clerks drew the judge’s attention to a letter from Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi’s lawyer.

The judge informed the accused, “Your lawyer has written a letter stating that he is no longer representing you.”

A suspension of proceedings has been requested by Asamoah’s attorneys, lead by Victoria Barth, as they await the outcome of an appeal contesting the trial court’s ruling that denied their request for additional disclosures.

October 20, 2025, has been set aside for the motion. In order for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi to obtain legal representation and for the defense attorney to serve the prosecution, the case was subsequently postponed.
