A truck reportedly suffered a brake failure and crashed into three vehicles, including a Pragyia (tricycle taxi), at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) West Gate on Thursday afternoon, causing significant damage to all the vehicles involved.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:48 PM when the truck, descending the slope toward the East Gate, lost control and rammed into the stationary vehicles. Eyewitnesses recounted that the truck driver was seen honking and attempting to brake before the heavy vehicle slammed into the queue.
“All we saw was the truck speeding down the hill. The driver was shouting and honking, but the vehicle wouldn’t stop. Then it hit the Pragyia and two other cars in front,” said an eyewitness at the scene.
The Pragyia and the two cars were all badly damaged. The Pragyia sustained severe frontal and side damage, while the other vehicles suffered extensive impact to their rear and side panels. At least three people were reported injured, with two sent to the UCC Hospital for treatment. Another victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and assist the injured. Traffic at the East Gate was temporarily redirected through the university’s West Gate to allow for emergency operations and towing of the damaged vehicles.
The truck has since been impounded for a technical inspection. Police sources indicate that a preliminary investigation points to mechanical failure, likely due to poor maintenance of the braking system. Officials from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) are expected to conduct a detailed examination.
Authorities have advised drivers, especially those operating commercial and heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure regular maintenance to prevent similar accidents in the future.
