Royal Burial Rites for Late Wenchi Queen Mother Begin November 25

The Wenchi Traditional Area to bid a royal farewell to Nana Atoaa Ampoforo Twewaa Otosuo Sramangyedua III, the revered Queenmother who passed away at 95.

As the sixth child of her late parents, Nana Atoaa Sramangyedua died on Friday, June 13, 2025, after a short illness.

Enstooled on 7th January 1977, Nana Atoaa Ampoforo Twewaa Otosuo Sramangyedua III 48-year reign was a testament to her dedication, wisdom, and strength.

Her royal transition, scheduled to take place from November 25 to 30, 2025, will bring together various stakeholders, including educational institutions, chiefs, religious leaders, and the general public.

The burial rites will feature a series of events, including a procession, cultural display, musketry, and traditional rituals.

The late Wenchi Queen Mother’s burial rites, as announced by the funeral committee, will kick off on Thursday, November 27, 2025, with the participation of educational institutions, Adikrofoo, herdmen, and the clergy.

The following day, Friday, November 28, 2025, will feature the national and regional houses of chiefs, paramountcies, political parties, and dignitaries.

The royal farewell will continue on Saturday, November 29, 2025, with President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Lordina Mahama, Chief of Staff, former presidents, and the Bono Regional House of Chiefs in attendance.

Interdenominational church service will be held at the Wenchi Jubilee Park on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

Known in private life as Abena Nsia Boatemaa, the late Queen Mother of the Wenchi Traditional Area had a notable legal history.

In 2011, she was involved in a Supreme Court case against her brother, Nketiah, on October 26.

A decade later, in 2021, she won a significant case at the High Court, affirming her right to choose her grandson, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, as the paramount chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area.

This victory solidified her authority and paved the way for her grandson’s installation as the current Wenchimanhene.

Her landmark court victory affirmed her authority in succession matters, setting a precedent for Ghana’s chieftaincy system.

The late Wenchi Queen Mother also supported the revival of Apoɔ and other royal festivals, acted as a spiritual and cultural advisor to generations of traditional leaders, and served as a quiet reconciler behind many family and stool disputes.

Nana Atoaa’s legacy extends beyond her traditional role. She was a trailblazer who defended her rights and the rights of Queenmothers everywhere.

A champion of education and women’s empowerment, Nana Sramangyedua inspired generations of traditional leaders.

Nana Sramangyedua’s life has been described as a celebration of tradition, freedom fighter, courage, and service, leaving behind a lasting legacy, and her memory according to many, will be cherished by the people of Wenchi and beyond.

The late Wenchi Queen Mother’s passing is a significant loss to the Wenchi Manhene and president of the Traditional Council, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III and his sub-chiefs as a key counsellor succumbed to illness.
