Mr. Douglas Mackenzie Kpodo, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Rent Control Department (RCD), has praised the department for its digital platform, which aims to close the gaps in Ghana’s conventional rental service system.
In an effort to enhance rent control, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, introduced the Rent Control Digital platform in Accra in September.
The new tool, which can be found at https://rentcontrol.mwh.gov.gh, attempts to increase rental services’ accessibility for Ghanaians while also enhancing the efficiency and transparency of rental operations.
The platform rentcontrol.mwh.gov.gh will enable both landlords and tenants to manage essential tasks like registering properties, filing complaints, and resolving disputes online, without physically visiting the Rent Control Offices, according to Mr. Kpodo.
He claims that one of the platform’s primary functions is its capacity to enable digital tenancy agreement signing, which streamlines the leasing process and does away with the need for paper documentation. This would not only save time but also guarantee more transparent and safe record-keeping.
Additionally, the Rent Control Director noted that the platform would post rental properties online, facilitating the process for tenants to find housing without the need for middlemen like agents.
“This digital transformation is about more than convenience, it is about leveling the playing field for all Ghanaians regardless of their geographical location or socio-economic status to ensure that everyone has equal access to fair and efficient rental services”, Director Kpodo stated.
According to him, the goal is to make the system more accessible and less reliant on in-person visits, especially for those who reside in rural areas.
“Our department has always been committed to ensuring peaceful coexistence between landlords and tenants and this tool will help us do that more effectively. We can now reach Ghanaians no matter where they are without them having to travel long distances to access our services”, Rev. Kpodo noted.
