Prince Tweneboah earns Black Meteors call-up as Desmond Ofei begins U-23 rebuilding project

Basake Holy Stars winger Prince Tweneboah has earned a place in Ghana’s U-23 national team after being named in Desmond Ofei’s squad for the opening phase of preparations ahead of the 2027 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The exciting attacker is among the home-based players invited to report to the Erata Hotel in East Legon on Wednesday, August 5, as the Black Meteors begin preparations for the crucial qualifying campaign.

Tweneboah’s inclusion comes after an exceptional 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season in which he established himself as one of the competition’s standout performers.

The Basake Holy Stars star registered 11 goals and six assists in an outstanding campaign, helping the Western Region club make a strong impression in the top flight.

His exploits also earned him four NASCO Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards, while former Black Stars goalkeeper Fatau Dauda named him in his Ghana Premier League Team of the Season.

The 20-year-old’s impressive form has also attracted interest from several Ghana Premier League clubs, with Hearts of Oak, Medeama SC and Aduana FC all monitoring his situation ahead of the new season.

The initial phase of the Black Meteors’ camp will feature players drawn from the Ghana Premier League and the Division One League, with foreign-based players expected to join the squad at a later date.

Ghana received a bye in the opening round of the qualifiers and will begin its campaign in October 2026, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) yet to conduct the draw.

The Black Meteors are aiming to secure a place at the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, which will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the men’s football event at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Ofei, who guided Ghana’s U-20 side to gold at the 2023 African Games, will be hoping to build a competitive squad capable of returning the Black Meteors to the continental stage, with Tweneboah expected to be among the players looking to stake a claim for a regular place.
