President Mahama Directs Minerals Commission to Grant Mining License to UMaT

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minerals Commission to grant a mining license to the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), a decisive step aimed at advancing practical mining education and strengthening Ghana’s extractive industry.

The announcement came during a stakeholder engagement and is expected to enable UMaT to conduct regulated mining operations for research, hands-on training, and technological innovation.

President Mahama emphasised the critical role of local institutions in managing the nation’s mineral resources and highlighted that sustainable growth in the mining sector depends on cultivating strong domestic expertise.

“Ghana cannot continue to export raw minerals without investing in institutions that equip our people to add value and responsibly manage these resources,” the President remarked.

UMaT, Ghana’s premier mining and technology university, has long sought direct access to a mining concession to provide students with practical experience and promote applied research in mining engineering, mineral processing, and environmental management. Granting the licence is expected to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world practice.

Industry analysts suggest the move will enhance UMaT’s reputation as a centre of excellence while fostering innovation, sound policy development, and responsible mining practices nationwide. Operating under stringent regulatory oversight, the university’s activities are poised to set a benchmark for sustainable and environmentally conscious mining.

The Minerals Commission has been tasked with expediting the licensing process while ensuring strict compliance with mining regulations, environmental safeguards, and community engagement protocols. Consultations with traditional authorities and local communities will also form part of the process.

The decision has been welcomed by students, academics, and industry stakeholders, who view it as a forward-looking initiative that positions Ghana as a leader in mining education and sustainable resource management in Africa.
