President John Dramani Mahama has officially announced the dualization of the 73.6-kilometer Cape Coast–Takoradi route, which is a vital part of the Trans–West African Highway and National Route 1.
Within two years, the project is anticipated to be finished as part of the government’s Big Push roads strategy. The dual carriageway will have 20 kilometers of service roads, 10 bridges, 15 footbridges, nine interchanges, axle load stations, and rest stops to enhance traffic flow and safety.
Construction works have been divided into three lots, with three contractors assigned as follows:
- Lot 1: Cape Coast to Kissi
- Lot 2: Kissi to Daboase
- Lot 3: Daboase to Takoradi Airport Roundabout
Following an inspection of the Western Regional Hospital at Apemenyim, President Mahama spoke at the sod-cutting ceremony at Assorko Essaman in the Shama District on Tuesday, October 21.

He described the Cape Coast–Takoradi road as a vital national route that had deteriorated significantly, leading to a high number of traffic accidents and fatalities.
According to him, the dualization project will boost commerce and economic integration throughout the country’s western corridor and beyond, in addition to improving safety.
