In a bold move aimed at curbing government expenditure and redirecting resources to priority sectors, President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances and fuel allocations to all political appointees.
The directive, which forms part of a broader initiative to reduce public spending, was communicated through a statement issued by the Presidency. According to the release signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, the President’s decision is part of a commitment to lead by example in these economically challenging times.
“This measure is in line with ongoing efforts to streamline government operations and focus national resources on high-impact areas,” the statement said. “The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make.”
The move adds to a growing list of austerity measures undertaken by the Mahama administration. These include a significant reduction in the number of Ministers and Presidential Office staff, as well as the termination of satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other government institutions.
Political analysts see this as a strategic attempt by the President to reinforce his government’s image as fiscally responsible amid rising concerns over public sector spending. Citizens and civil society organizations have long called for the government to reduce what many see as excessive perks enjoyed by political officeholders.
The cancellation of fuel benefits is expected to save the government millions of cedis annually, which could be redirected towards developmental projects, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
This decisive action is likely to trigger mixed reactions within political circles, but it has already gained traction among sections of the public who have been demanding accountability and prudent management of state resources.
With general elections approaching, this announcement could serve as both a political statement and a policy stance, showcasing the government’s willingness to make tough decisions in the national interest.
