Ernest Frimpong, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service due to remarks he made recently.

In a video that went popular on social media, Mr. Frimpong was shown speaking at a forum full of people who were presumably illegal miners. He allegedly advised them to fight off military soldiers who claimed to be patrolling the area and trying to evict them with force.

Also present at the forum was the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who also heads the Regional Security Council.

Ernest Frimpong has already refuted the accusations, claiming he never supported illicit mining or incited miners to take up arms against the armed forces.

He insisted that his words were misconstrued and that they were taken out of context during a two-hour conversation with small-scale artisan miners.
