The Electoral Commission (EC) has been urged to reconsider its decision to ban the People’s National Convention (PNC) from the impending December 2024 presidential elections by Samson Asaki Awingobit, the PNC’s National Chairman.
Eleven presidential candidates were disqualified for filing false nomination forms, including PNC flagbearer Bernard Mornah. Other infractions included using registered voters from one district to support nominations in another, which is against electoral laws.
Speaking at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on October 1, where the EC acknowledged ongoing efforts to correct errors in the voters register, Mr Awingobit expressed disappointment that the PNC’s Presidential Candidate was disqualified over ‘errors.’
He maintained that human error is unavoidable, pointing out that political parties, like other human institutions, are prone to errors even while the EC works to address problems with the voter registration.
On the basis of these mistakes, he pleaded with the EC not to dismiss the PNC candidate.
In order to maintain transparency, Mr. Awingobit also applauded the EC for broadcasting the IPAC meeting on television and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for supporting this move.
Bernard Mornah, meanwhile, has sued the EC, arguing that his disqualification was illegal and that it violated his rights.
In order to compel the EC to allow him to run for president again in the 2024 elections, he is requesting a court ruling.
Similar legal action has been initiated by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) against the EC following their disqualification from the election.
