The Government of Ghana has voiced dissatisfaction with Organised Labour’s decision to move forward with a planned nationwide strike on October 10, even though they recently met and decided to fight against galamsey, or illegal mining.
Organised Labour has been pressuring the president to announce a state of emergency about illegal mining and to enact long-term remedies to deal with the problem.
Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar expressed disappointment at Organised Labour’s determination on carrying out the strike in a statement issued on Monday, October 7, citing the government’s resolve to combat illegal mining.
The government has also backed calls for presidential candidates to sign a pact against illegal mining and has decided to revoke the Environmental Protection Regulations 2023 (L.I 2462) when Parliament reconvenes.
