NPP PRIMARIES: Bawumia Seals Historic Return as NPP Flagbearer-Elect

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has officially emerged victorious in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, clinching the party’s flagbearership for the 2028 general elections after a decisive nationwide exercise held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The former Vice-President secured an emphatic mandate, polling 110,645 votes, which translates into 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast. His commanding lead became evident as results streamed in from polling centres across the country, with Dr Bawumia consistently ahead of the pack throughout the collation process.

In what party officials described as a highly competitive and transparent internal contest, over 211,000 delegates cast their votes at more than 300 polling centres nationwide, underscoring the depth of participation within the party.

Dr Bawumia faced stiff competition from a formidable field of contenders, including former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and businessman as well as former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The primaries were successfully conducted across all 16 regions of Ghana, culminating in Dr Bawumia’s confirmation as the party’s standard-bearer-elect. His victory positions him at the forefront of the NPP’s renewed charge to reclaim political power in the 2028 general elections, marking a significant milestone in the party’s internal democratic journey.
