The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, has issued a stern warning that the party risks sliding further into decline unless discipline, authority, and decisive leadership are urgently restored at the highest level.
According to him, creeping indiscipline and a perceived lack of firmness within the party’s leadership structure have eroded internal unity and diminished the NPP’s appeal among its traditional support base nationwide.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Friday, January 23, Mr. Osei Owusu argued that the NPP requires a National Chairman with the resolve and consistency demonstrated by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We need a chairman like Asiedu Nketiah. His consistency and firmness are what hold the NDC together,” he asserted.
He observed that weak enforcement of party rules has encouraged misconduct and factionalism within the NPP, triggering dissatisfaction and prompting a steady drift of members and sympathisers toward the opposition.
“There came a time when people began leaving the NPP in large numbers to join the NDC, and the trend continues. That alone tells you that something is drawing them there,” he noted.
Mr. Osei Owusu attributed the NDC’s growing cohesion and appeal largely to the leadership style of Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, whom he described as unyielding on matters of discipline and accountability.
“If you choose to be defiant under his leadership, he will deal with you. That seriousness instils order and makes the party attractive,” he added.
He further suggested that the NPP may need to rethink its approach to electing national executives, cautioning that internal elections at this stage may fail to deliver the kind of leader the party urgently needs.
“To regain our appeal, discipline must come first. If we rush into elections now, we may not get the leader required at this critical moment,” he explained.
Instead, Mr. Osei Owusu called for a deliberate and strategic search for a unifying figure capable of enforcing discipline, restoring confidence, and repositioning the party for future electoral success.
In this regard, he openly endorsed former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko as a suitable candidate to steer the party, describing him as firm, experienced, and highly respected within NPP circles.
“If Boakye Agyarko decides to lead the party, I will set aside everything I am doing to support him. He is the kind of leader who can restore discipline and bring everyone together,” he declared.
His comments come at a time when the NPP continues to wrestle with internal strains and mounting calls for reform, as party faithful increasingly demand stronger leadership and unity ahead of the next general elections.
