The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Council has formally announced its leadership team for the 9th Parliament, outlining the party’s approach to handling legislative matters in the next session.
The newly appointed leadership lineup includes:
- Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.
- Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader.
- Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip.
- Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip.
- Davies Opoku as Second Deputy Minority Whip.
The NPP plans to meet with its Members of Parliament-elect to inform them of their tasks and responsibilities in advance of the 9th Parliament’s formal opening in response to the leadership confirmations.
This choice for leadership demonstrates the NPP’s dedication to preserving unity and guaranteeing efficient parliamentary administration even as the party adjusts to a new political environment.
After suffering a severe electoral defeat in the general elections of 2024, the NPP’s new leadership is facing difficulties.
The party saw a dramatic drop from the 137 seats it controlled in the 8th Parliament to just 81 seats in the 9th Parliament after losing more than 50 seats. The National Democratic Congress (NDC), on the other hand, became the majority in the 9th Parliament after winning more than 180 seats.
The NPP’s leadership will be crucial in controlling opposition tactics and determining legislative goals in the incoming Parliament as it negotiates this change in power dynamics.
