NPP Leadership To Apologise To Prez. Mahama Over Chairman Wontumi’s Diminish Remarks – Ayew Afriyie

Ranking Member on the Health Committee and Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has revealed that the top hierarchy of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to officially apologise to President John Dramani Mahama on behalf of the Ashanti regional chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).

The Ashanti regional Chairman was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for a multitude of alleged crimes, including money laundering, causing financial loss to the state, and fraud.

Despite being granted bail, Chairman Wontumi is still under investigation.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s ‘Face to Face’ with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Dr. Ayew Afriyie alleged that President Mahama may be strongly behind the legal woes of Chairman Wontumi.

“For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama. Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line,” Dr. Ayew Afriyie said.

According to him, it is obvious that Chairman Wontumi’s past comments, widely circulated in videos across social media, were inappropriate and personal, adding that Wontumi had agreed to apologize.

Dr. Afriyie expounded that while political rivalry is expected, personal attacks propagated on falsehoods should not be embraced, and called for humility from party leadership in addressing the issue.
