Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the FixTheCountry Movement, has criticized the Mahama government for taking an ineffective stance in the fight against galamsey.
Despite the government’s generosity, he claimed that its stance will destroy the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I worry that the careless attitudes on Galamsey would destroy NDC, despite the goodwill Dominic Ayine and Justice Sai are bringing to the administration in ORAL. Why are the signals contradictory? He wrote on Facebook that “the lands minister needs to be more decisive.”
In order to remind Ghanaians and the government of the urgent need to combat galamsey, he also announced plans to stage a protest on May 1.
On May Day, there will be a quiet march to show the government how much Ghanaians still care about the fight against careless mining.
“#SaveOurForests March 1st May?” he wrote.
Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Ken Ashigbey, also spoke out on the subject of Galamsey and urged that a state of emergency be imposed in the regions impacted by illegal small-scale mining.
According to him, the state of emergency will give those involved greater drive to stop the practice in its tracks.
