The Electoral Commission (EC) has sent a formal invitation to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a meeting aimed at engaging in conversation over several issues the party made regarding the voters register for the impending December 7 general elections.
Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the EC’s Deputy Chairperson, highlighted that in order to settle any outstanding concerns and guarantee a seamless election process, communication and cooperation between the Commission and political parties are essential.
Dr. Bossman Asare emphasized that the best approach to resolve any disagreements or issues about the voter list is still to have a positive conversation.
In a media interview, Dr. Asare stated that rather than staging a nationwide demonstration on September 17, the NDC should speak with the EC directly if they have concerns about the electoral register or any other part of the impending elections.
Dr. Asare went on to say that although protests and public demonstrations are acceptable ways to voice dissatisfaction, they shouldn’t be considered the final goal if the NDC’s true protest goal is to enhance the democratic process.
“We think that what will change something is the discussion table. We coming together, although we concede that political parties are some things which are entrenched in our laws, individuals can come together and demonstrate, and express concerns as far as they have certain things to express concerns about.
“So that one is not a problem to us. But we think that if the objective of the NDC is a solution to have a credible register, a robust register entering into the 2024 elections, we believe that they must be willing to come to the discussion table”. He stated.
