The parliamentary primary that was conducted in the Amenfi Central constituency on May 13, 2023, has been declared void by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has also mandated a new election.

During a meeting on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, the party’s Functional Executive Committee made the decision.

The primary election results were contested in court by certain party members, who wanted a rerun of the poll due to Joana Ghansah Cudjoe, the musician Keche’s wife, not being eligible to win. This led to the annulment of the election.

Joana’s membership of the party is said to be in doubt over allegations of forgery.

The High Court in Sekondi had been hearing the case, but the NDC’s decision to annul the election and hold new primary appears to have preempted the court’s ruling.

On September 4, 2024, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, made the announcement in a press statement, saying that the party had chosen to accept new nominations for the Amenfi Central constituency’s upcoming primary.

A calendar for the upcoming primary has been made public; nominations will start on Friday, September 6, 2024, and the election is set to occur on an unspecified date prior to the EC deadline for submitting nominations.

The NDC has previously encountered difficulties about its parliamentary primaries.
