Minority alleges National Security operatives stole GH₵10,000 from former BoG Governor

According to the minority in parliament, members of the National Security Secretariat have engaged in illegal raids on political opponents, and some of the staff have even engaged in theft.

Security personnel stormed the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison on Wednesday, March 19, using what Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called a “Rambo-style” strategy, he said during a press conference on Thursday.

Security personnel allegedly stole GH₵10,000 during their raid on Dr. Addison’s Accra residence.

“Unfortunately for the Governor some GH¢10,000 cedis on his bed could not be found.”

He further asserted that, as part of the operation, valuables belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife, such as necklaces and earrings, were taken.

Following an alleged National Security raid on the home of former BoG Governor Ernest Addison at Roman Ridge in Accra, he made this statement.

The Effutu member of parliament further implied that the raiders were not paid and had political motivations, which compelled them to steal from their victims.

“Some of these hungry party foot soldiers, who parade themselves as national security operatives, are perhaps not even being paid, so they use these so-called operations as an opportunity to steal,” he stated.

He said that this is the first time in Ghanaian history that a former central bank governor has been treated this way and voiced his displeasure at what he views as an unparalleled degree of abuse of power.

The Minority further charged that the government intimidated political opponents, especially former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s appointments, by utilizing National Security agents.

“This lawlessness must stop. It is clear that the government has unleashed national security operatives on its opponents, particularly appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Afenyo-Markin charged.

He called on the government to halt these actions immediately and ensure that national security personnel operate within the confines of the law, rather than acting as enforcers of political persecution.
