Medeama draw TP Mazembe in blockbuster CAF Champions League preliminary round clash

Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC have been handed a daunting assignment in the preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after being drawn against DR Congo powerhouse TP Mazembe.

The draw, staged at CAF headquarters in Cairo on Thursday, paired the Tarkwa-based side with one of the continent’s most decorated clubs in what promises to be a fascinating two-legged encounter.

Medeama will host the first leg at the TnA Stadium before travelling to Kinshasa for the decisive return fixture as they bid to secure passage to the second preliminary round.

It will be another major continental test for the Mauve and Yellow, who qualified for the Champions League after clinching the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League title.

Should Medeama overcome the challenge of TP Mazembe, they will advance to face either Tunisian giants Club Africain or Malian champions Djoliba AC in the second preliminary round, with a place in the lucrative group stage at stake.

The first-leg matches of the opening preliminary round are scheduled to be played between September 4 and 6, while the return fixtures will take place from September 11 to 13.

The second preliminary round will follow with first-leg matches slated for September 14 to 16 before the return legs are played between September 23 and 25.

Medeama will be hoping to build on their previous CAF Champions League experience as they prepare for one of the toughest ties of the preliminary round against five-time African champions TP Mazembe, a club renowned for its rich continental pedigree and formidable home record.

A positive result against the Congolese giants would mark another significant milestone for the Ghanaian champions and boost their hopes of returning to the Champions League group stage.
