After a High Court decision in Accra, the Ghanaian conglomerate McDan Group of Companies—which has holdings in agricultural, shipping, logistics, aviation, oil and gas, construction, security, and more—lost possession of over 16 acres of land.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) owns the site. In February 2025, GACL filed a writ against two McDan entities, McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, for violating lease agreements and failing to pay ground rent.
Near Kotoka International Airport, next to and across from Action Chapel International, lie the disputed lots, which are roughly 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres in size.
In addition to $26,296 in unpaid ground rent, GACL requested a permanent injunction to stop the defendants from tampering with the property.
Citing the defendants’ inability to provide a convincing defense, the court allowed GACL complete re-entry and possession of the land in a decision rendered on May 6, 2025. In addition to awarding all requested relief, the court mandated that the firms pay GH¢50,000 in legal fees.
In December 2024, the group’s affiliate McDan Aviation suspended operations at Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 1 because of unpaid debts. The land dispute remained unsolved until this verdict, even though those payments were eventually settled.
GACL hailed the ruling as a significant win for its asset recovery initiatives and attributed the outcome to the cooperation of its Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, and its Legal Department.
