MATCH REPORT: Basake Holy Stars Shatter Kotoko’s Unbeaten Run in Nzema Showdown

Asante Kotoko’s unbeaten run in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League came crashing down on Wednesday after a 2-1 loss to Basake Holy Stars in their outstanding matchday 3 clash at the Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III Sports Arena in Ampain.

Kotoko arrived as the league’s only undefeated side and hoped to draw level with leaders Aduana FC. But Holy Stars produced a spirited, resilient performance to halt the Porcupine Warriors’ impressive streak.

The first half was tightly contested, with both sides creating promising openings but failing to find the breakthrough. Four minutes into the second half, the hosts struck first. Richmond Somiah reacted sharply to finish off Gideon Kofi Quaison’s brilliant effort, sending the home fans into celebration.

Kotoko replied immediately in the 53rd minute, as Peter Amidu Acquah threaded a precise pass into the path of Kwame Poku, who calmly slotted home to level the score and inject fresh momentum into the visitors.

Sensing the need to regain control, Coach Johnson Smith made four impactful substitutions in the 60th minute, bringing on Francis Asante, Matthew Adanse Mensah, Bismark Teye, and Hagan Kofie. The changes rejuvenated Holy Stars and helped swing the tempo back in their favour.

Despite Kotoko applying consistent pressure in search of a late winner, Holy Stars held firm and delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time. A slick exchange between Francis Oteng Gyetuah and Matthew Adanse Mensah carved open the Kotoko backline, allowing Prince Tweneboah to fire home a dramatic 92nd-minute winner.

The victory lifts Basake Holy Stars to nine points, strengthening their hopes of escaping the relegation zone. Kotoko remain fourth, three points behind the summit, missing a valuable opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders.
