Man jailed two years for vandalising Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange

The Dansoman Circuit Court convicted 48-year-old Yaw Asare, a head porter, to two years in prison for illegally causing damage to portions of the recently built Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange.

Section 172 of the Criminal Offenses Act (Act 29), which forbids causing unauthorized harm, is the basis for his conviction.

Asare was detained on June 9, 2025, for damaging parapet beams and accessories on the interchange, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Roads and Highways on August 22 and signed by Nasir Ahmad Yartey, its Head of Public Relations.

“The act is part of a concerning pattern of destruction targeting public road infrastructure, including frequent crashes that damage traffic lights and vandalism,” the Ministry said. Such behavior is a criminal offense and will not go unpunished, it warned.

“The Ministry will continue to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to ensure that anyone found unlawfully damaging public road infrastructure is prosecuted and made to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement read.
