Majority and Minority parties in parliament disagreed significantly during a debate on whether the National Service Bill should be examined under a Certificate of Urgency.
The Education Committee Chairman moved the resolution in accordance with the committee’s consensus that the bill should be handled under the Certificate of Urgency.
The Minority, on the other hand, disagreed, contending that the law did not require immediate attention.
The Member for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, maintained that in order to convince the House to approve the measure with a Certificate of Urgency, the Minister of Education had to offer convincing justifications for why relevant parties had been sufficiently involved.
The MP for Bole Bamboi, Yussif Sulemana, contended that although the Affirmative item was being prioritised, it was a more vital item and should not be given emergency status.
Murtala Mohammed, the MP for Tamale Central, said that the House lacked a quorum for any government business, but the Speaker nonetheless went ahead and called for a vote on categorizing the measure as urgent.
The 3rd Deputy Speaker, who chaired the session and declared that the “Ayes” had won after the vote, swept away his concern.
