Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has advised Ghanaians to hold politicians accountable for broken promises rather than exalting them.

He said that voters ought to remove leaders who break their promises.

Dr. Asah-Asante’s remarks were a reaction to the pattern of politicians breaking their pledges, especially when elections are approaching.

In a Monday, August 19, appearance on Joy FM’s Newsnight, he stated that the public should be involved in asking politicians how they plan to pay for the promises they are making to the average Ghanaian.

“What we also have to do is find out in detail how they are going to undertake these projects and when we are not satisfied, we should not glorify political parties saying that this is a party part of our tradition and that the leaders are part of our ethnic group and all that.

“We should not glorify them, we boot those people out if there is the need to do that. But more often than not, Ghanaians have looked on and have glorified politicians even though they did not serve their interest in the name of tradition, ethnicity, religion and whatnot. We tend to shy away from the truth and then we come back to complain,” he said.

According to him, it is time to take a different step to hold them accountable, adding that it is the work of electorates to do so.

“Remember that after all vigilance is the price of liberty. If you are not vigilant you are not going to get what you are supposed to get from public officers.
