Legally sanctioned search on Ex-BoG Governor is not a raid – Attorney General

Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine has refuted reports that a raid was undertaken on the property of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison.

Speaking to the media on Monday, March 24, Dr. Ayine explained that the operation was a legitimate search rather than a raid, as some have claimed or reported.

The MP for Bolgatanga East further stated that law enforcement agents obtained the required search warrants prior to their operation, in accordance with due process.

“There are limits to what you can do by saying that your house should not be searched. So we obtained warrants, and if the media wants, I can make those warrants available. There was no raid on his house, and there was nothing illegal or unconstitutional about what we did … It was a constitutionally sanctioned search,” he asserted.

Additionally, Dr. Ayine denied charges that security personnel stole GH₵10,000 during the operation, calling them a “insult” to law enforcement.

By calling the search a raid, he accused Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, of defaming law enforcement and the Attorney General’s office.

“We have a recording of Dr Addison and what he said about the search. If the Hon. Afenyo-Markin is daring, we will make that recording available. He should desist from maligning law enforcement officers and myself for the work that we are doing,” Dr Ayine cautioned.

He added that he is dedicated to maintaining moral legal conduct in his capacity as the Bar’s leader. He confirmed that the National Security and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) had both received advice to conduct their investigations within the bounds of the law.

“Afenyo-Markin should not abuse his parliamentary immunity by labelling or defaming public officials who are carrying out legally sanctioned public business,” Dr Ayine added.
