Concerned Residents of the Komenda Traditional Area have informed the Ghana Police Service that they plan to protest the Indian company’s lease on the Komenda Sugar Factory.
The protest, which was originally planned for Komenda on August 13, 2024, has been moved to Accra on September 17, 2024.
The protesters are requesting that the lease be cancelled and that the facility process sugarcane grown locally instead of importing raw sugar, which was the factory’s original purpose.
In a statement released on September 3, 2024, the residents formally notified the police in accordance with Section 1, clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
The group anticipates a turnout of at least 5,000 concerned Ghanaians from Accra and surrounding regions. The protest will start at 6:00 am from the 37 Lorry Station in Accra and will proceed to the Jubilee House.
They argue that the lease agreement was made without proper adherence to procedures and without adequate stakeholder consultation.
They have requested police support and security to ensure a peaceful demonstration.
