Kennedy Agyapong, a former member of parliament for Assin Central, has offered to serve as one of the sureties for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) board, who was recently released on bail.
Mr. Agyapong’s decision to intervene occurred during Monday, May 26 court proceedings, when Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was given GH¢10 million in bail, with two sureties needed to provide real property in the Greater Accra Region as proof of the amount.
As the legal team attempts to fulfill the bail requirements, Kennedy Agyapong, who was in court, offered to serve as one of the sureties, Citi News can confirm.
Prior to this, Duke Aaron Sasu, a lawyer for Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi, had argued in court that the accused should be released on his own recognizance.
He mentioned his client’s extensive history of public service, which included previous positions as a lecturer and pro vice-chancellor at the University of Cape Coast, as well as ministers for education and ports and harbors.
Additionally, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi served as the previous chair of the Public Procurement Authority’s Board.
The defense further claimed that the accused’s old age of 80 years and underlying medical issues that have necessitated two procedures were reasons for leniency in the bail conditions.
Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, the deputy attorney general, did not object to the bail request but instead asked the court to adopt the same terms as were previously applied to the case’s first accused, which was GH¢15 million bond with two sureties supported by Greater Accra Region landed property.
Justice Comfort Tasiame, however, agreed to a GH¢10 million bail reduction with two sureties, both of whom had to be able to provide proof of landed property in the Greater Accra Region.
