Kennedy Agyapong, the flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has honed his campaign pitch by vehemently other contenders and stating that any economic strategy for Ghana that is based on talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is doomed.
On September 6, Mr. Agyapong made the case that Ghana’s repeated need on IMF bailouts is a reflection of its inadequate economic policy and poor leadership in a tweet on his official X (previously Twitter) account.
“You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” Agyapong wrote.
He described his goal of creating an economy that can sustain itself without outside funding.
“My vision is to build an economy so self-reliant and powerful that the IMF becomes irrelevant,” he stated.
Ahead of the NPP’s flagbearer election to select a leader for the general elections in 2028, the remarks are commonly seen as a jab at competitors inside the party. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who oversaw the Economic Management Team during Ghana’s current IMF program, is one of his rivals.
His campaign has a strong emphasis on manufacturing-based job growth, domestic investment, and fiscal restraint to prevent excessive borrowing.
